Language is an important part of our lives. I remember when I came to the United States I spoke a little English. I went to school to improve my speaking, reading and writing skills; even now I'm learning my second language, without English I can't survive in this new environment. Now I'm raising my children and I want them to have this important skill, this privilege of knowing a second language, the language of their parents and grandparents. Looking at studies on bilingual children, research shows how important it is for a child to learn a second language. Raising a child bilingual is an advantage because it improves social skills, academic competence, introduces the child to a different culture and prepares him for the future. The first advantage is a better result at school and academically. Studies show that bilingual children have better reading and writing skills and can even learn the third language easily. Carey Myles says, “Bilingualism has been linked to a number of positive cognitive benefits, including early reading, improved problem-solving skills, and higher scores on SATs, including the math section.” Myles further argues that bilingual children have been shown to demonstrate “better listening perception” and that they “recognize that language is symbolic and are more skilled at communicating” (2003). Additionally, research has found that bilingual children are able to concentrate better, staying focused on a subject in class. Since this is an important factor, these children have greater preparation and success in school (Lust, B., 2006). Many parents, however, are concerned about negative effects on the child's development if they do not have adverse effects such as speech delay or language confusion.
