Over the past decade, obesity has become one of the most threatening problems in today's world. For perspective, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that in 2005, nearly 1.6 billion people over the age of 15 were facing obesity problems. This report also indicates that 40 million children under the age of 5 struggle with obesity and more than 400 million adults suffer from obesity. In this regard, expert opinions indicate that if the trend is not controlled by 2015, nearly 2.3 billion adults will face the challenge of being overweight while nearly 700 million will be obese (World Health Organization). The trend is actually getting worse due to lifestyle changes and poor diets among people from different backgrounds. Although some factors such as a person's race and background influence how quickly obesity spreads, these factors still remain the main causes. The problem of obesity has had different consequences for both individuals and society as a whole. Some of the problems identified concern the economy. This is mainly due to the fact that obesity, closely associated with health problems and the rate of production, is an effect of a negative economy. Furthermore, the costs associated with obesity in preventing or treating the disease directly or indirectly affect the economy. Basically, direct costs are usually realized during the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of obesity and other diseases associated with it. On the other hand, individuals and the wider economy suffer indirect costs when obesity reaches the level of exhausting their productive capacity (Deakin University Australia).
