The implementation of the Principles of Good Practice for Student Affairs (1996) is an important step in higher education. It provides a blueprint focused on student growth, aimed at student affairs professionals, faculty and students themselves. The principles are designed to maintain structure when creating programs or policies that will affect the student population. The uses of the principles are implemented in the Office of Multicultural Affairs where the design of a program will use four of the assigned principles (ACPA and NASPA, 1996). The four principles implemented are: using resources effectively, creating educational partnerships, engaging students in active learning, and building supportive and inclusive communities. Multicultural Affairs' plan is to improve the campus environment through the acceptance of diverse student populations. The office creates programs and workshops aimed at specific groups for diversity awareness training. The training sessions include multiple developmental theories while tracking the participants' perspective. The program design follows the Principles of Good Practice for Student Affairs (1998) model where participants' experiences help direct discussions and facilitation. The mission of Multicultural Affairs is to implement the goals of the institution (ACPA and NASPA, 1996) while providing students, faculty, and administrators with knowledge of multicultural awareness.
