Topic > Matel's Considerations for a Possible Toy Recall

1. What decisions or actions need to be taken? Take the point of view of the protagonists of the case. When Mattel's management team received reports that the surface paint on Sarge Cars toys contained lead in excess of U.S. federal regulations, they were faced with several short-term decisions. and in the long term. Looking at the short term, Mattel must decide which toys to recall and how to address the consequences common to any product recall, such as damage to Mattel's reputation and the financial damage done in terms of increased costs and lost sales. Finally, Mattel will also need to address how future product recalls will not occur. Do they implement more stringent regulations and inspections?2. What alternative actions have you considered? Are the alternatives relevant, practical, executable? There are a few other actions Mattel will need to consider regarding a possible product recall. One option is to do nothing and wait for regulators to push Mattel to issue a product recall. This is not an option I recommend because it could increase Mattel's exposure to future litigation. Another alternative action is to recall all products that have higher than acceptable levels of lead. As I mentioned, Mattel will also have to decide how to deal with the consequences of a recall. How will Mattel repair the damage done to its brand? How do they address the financial obligations of the recall when refunding consumers and coordinating the logistics of all recalled products? Mattel will also have to consider where future products will be made. They continue to produce core brands at company-owned facilities and outsource non-core brands for... middle of paper... with a product recall. How will Mattel address the damage done to its brand and reputation? How will they manage the additional costs associated with the product recall along with the loss of future sales? How will they handle the possibility of disputes with consumers? To help address these issues, I would immediately communicate with the public and reassure the public that everything is being done to ensure their safety while also taking full responsibility for the recall. The case also mentions the logistics and coordination of organizing a recall as another challenge. With an estimated 250,000 Sarge Cars possibly affected by lead paint, coordinating the return of all the contaminated toys will be very challenging. Mattel can coordinate with retailers to set up locations where consumers can return toys making logistics easier and more coordinated.
