I chose Cambodian Americans as my target culture because it was a place I knew very little about. My ignorance of that part of the world is nothing short of ridiculous. Cambodian American was a great choice because both the people and the culture really fascinate me. While some Cambodian Americans become very Westernized, accepting most American cultural norms, some hold strong to their Cambodian traditions and lifestyle. Through Geert Hofstede's Taxonomy I will explore the dynamics of Cambodian American culture. Through Identity, Hierarchy, Gender, Truth and Virtue I will try to describe a culture previously practically unknown to me. I chose Hofstede's taxonomy over Bond's because Michael Bond himself told me so. “Charlotte, I did this work in the 1980s and found that 3 of my 4 national-level dimensions overlapped with Hofstede's and one was distinct.” Bond told me when I asked him to elaborate on his taxonomy. Cambodian culture is very collectivistic, and many of these values are still held by younger generations of Cambodian Americans. In Cambodian culture, family comes first. Terry Nhim, his in-laws Mon Neang and Roeun Muth and his brother-in-law Vanna Neang all emphasized a lot on the importance of family and taking care of each other. “Our family is large and it's not just my parents and brother, but also my extended family. We try to be close to each other and, of course, there are some families we are not as close to as others. Towards my family we hug each other after saying goodbye. With someone who isn't family or just isn't close to me, I just leave it as a formal greeting. Having said that, if we touch each other, as a family it's fine, it shows love, but to someone...... middle of paper ......etc. 2013.Kang, David. "Ethnography." Telephone interview.
