The role of performance anxiety in the development and maintenance of sexual dysfunction in men and womenInternational Journal of Stress Management 2005, vol. 12, No.4, 379-388 Author Marita McCabe wrote this article to discuss a current study focusing on the association of attitudes toward sex regarding relationship quality, performance anxiety, stress, and sexual dysfunction ( McCabe 2005 page 379). The study results demonstrated related types of sexual dysfunction among a group of men and women. The article begins by explaining sexual response cycles by dividing them into four phases. The four phases are desire, arousal, orgasm and resolution (McCabe page 380). McCabe stated that most sexual dysfunctions occur in the first three phases of the sexual response cycle. Performance anxiety occurs in both men and women and causes obsessive worries about their sexual performance and can lead to it becoming the main reason for sexual disorders and/or dysfunctions (McCabe p. 380; Masters & Johnson 1970).
