As a new manager, I have been called upon to change the environment of a department that is struggling to survive. The problems this department currently faces include an outdated product line, ineffective interdepartmental communication, and intense competition for corporate funding. These problems must be corrected for this department to survive, if this department cannot be turned around, the company will see it as a liability and will eventually find its own way to remedy the problem. I have outlined a plan to turn this department around and make positive changes that will result in a profitable department for the company. The first step is to meet with the company and discuss the company's overall goal to ensure that changes made to the department are in line with the company's goals. Information from this meeting with the company will be communicated to my department's management and we will use this information to develop new policies and procedures. This information will also be useful for the development of new products and new marketing campaigns. New products will be a crucial part of the department's turnaround, product development will not only show the company that our department can contribute new ideas but that it can also generate profits for the company. The goal of my plan is to make this department a profitable asset for the company, which will increase corporate funding for the department, and this is the first step towards that goal. The department's senior management will hold meetings to discuss new policies and to decide which policies are not in line with our ultimate goal so they can be eliminated. Our department will develop a mission statement to help guide decisions made and processes implemented, if a process does not match our mission statement then it is useless and not worth pursuing. Employee input will be solicited in the form of employee opinion polls, with management asking employees what changes they would like to see and what products and marketing ideas they think would be successful. This way we give employees a personal stake in what happens with our department, which in turn will improve employee engagement and pride in their work.
