In the production “O” the main character's position in society does not really take on the same importance as it did in Othello. The life of a war leader seems much more influential than that of a high school basketball star. The drama that comes with being on the high school basketball team is not Othello's responsibility. Othello has a well-known reputation for being able to handle himself in many situations emotionally and physically, which may be why the Duke of Venice individually chose him to wage war in the foreign land of Cyprus. With this being such a huge obligation for Othello, it created tension for the audience, especially one at the time of the creation of this play. When war breaks out between Venice and Turkey, things seem to be extremely tense within the characters, especially Othello. Between the defeat of the Turks and Cassius' drunken brawl, the recently conquered island of Cyprus and the Venetians seem overwhelmed by explosive emotions. Othello's responsibility in the war creates an easy way for the audience to emphasize the pressures his character faces. On the other hand, Odin's position in society in “O” is not comparable to the meaning attributed to Othello. Not only does their role in high school basketball seem less important, but the difference in pressure and emotion separates their shots. Odin, the basketball star lacks many things compared to the Moor, but above all he has no authority. The MVP stands next to Othello's shoes, which represent a size too large for him, much less anyone. The basketball star's responsibility is to be the leader of a team. This scenario involves much less magnitude and intensity when compared to a... middle of paper... involving his wife. In the event that Odin or Othello manages to win the spectators' vote, this important aspect of the two speeches puts Othello in the lead to win that vote. For the production of “O” to advertise that the film will be a modern translation of William Shakespeare's tragic Othello makes for a compellingly inaccurate statement. This is due to the fact that Odin's character remains on a very different level than Othello's in almost every situation in these two plays. The discourse, racism, and portrayal of characters within their themes couldn't have been more different. The level of importance and intensity within the play Othello will always be much more relevant than the main ideas of what Shakespeare really wanted in his play. Everything else seems to be a classic movie production trying to make a lot of money off someone else's idea.
