Pyramids are one of the ancient architectural structures known to man. They were built as tombs for pharaohs and queens. For a layman, when we talk about the pyramid, we automatically assume the Egyptians. Although one of the trademarks of the Egyptians was the pyramid, the Mesopotamians were the first to build a stepped pyramid structure. These raised platform buildings were known as Ziggurats. The ziggurat was the main architectural structure for the founders of the Mesopotamian civilization (3500 and 3000 BC); “the Sumerians”. Ziggurats were built using sun-dried baked stones which prevented them from lasting as long as the pyramids in Egypt. Most famous of all was King Urnammu's ziggurat at Ur in Iraq, although it was not as old as the pyramid at Giza. The lower levels of the ziggurats are covered with planted trees and earth just to give it a mountainous effect. It is believed that the gods lived in the mountains, thus bringing the faithful closer to heaven. Then only powerful priests could enter the ziggurats. The most famous pyramids are located in Egypt, there they are also known as the great pyramids. They were built with hard stone, glazed with limestone. This was a period of reflection by the ancient Kingdom of Egypt (2686-2181 BCE) on its political and social stability. Although slaves were said to be responsible for building the pyramids in Egypt, it was later confirmed that these were the work of various craftsmen and builders in general. The great success of the Egyptian pyramids proved that they were united. In the ancient kingdom, before the construction of the pyramids there were structured tombs to bury high-ranking people eg...... middle of paper ......and those mountain-like structures housed the spirits of their ancestors. The Mexicans also had similar stepped structures, but theirs can be compared to the Sumerian Ziggurats of Mesopotamia. Stacked pyramids similar to those built by Imhotep in Egypt can be compared to the Spanish ones although they are built of lava stone. They may have been dated to the 19th century; these pyramids were destroyed due to the material used for construction. The Mexicans, on the other hand, used their pyramids for human sacrifices. However, the southern Indians used their pyramids for religious use, they serve as sacred temples. Right from the pyramid of Khufu to the present day, such as the pyramids found in France. Research has shown that pyramid-based structures can be used all over the world. Works Cited http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyramid
