IntroductionSassen (2001) defines a global city as one within which “the connections that bind a city have a direct and tangible effect on global affairs through socio-economic means”. Sassen underlines the “global” importance of these cities. However, we must study the individual places in which this global entity is made up, in order to fully understand the whole; something we have tried to achieve by focusing on the Shoreditch and Hoxton districts. To begin our report, we will first outline our research methodologies. Subsequently, a literature review will be carried out, analyzing and summarizing the literature we have studied to support our work in the field. The main section of the report will include our analysis of the issue, exploring the transformation of London's “industrial, employment, income and residential” structures. We will then discuss our analyses, drawing a conclusion focusing on the extent to which we believe London has been transformed. For this reason, qualitative fieldwork collected on our walks around Shoreditch and Hoxton formed the basis of this report. Our fieldwork includes notes, personal responses and photos, all collected through individual observation during a two-hour circular tour of the central areas of Shoreditch and Hoxton.
