Suicidal ideation is a medical term for unusual thoughts or concerns about suicide. The range of suicidal ideation varies greatly, from fleeting to detailed planning, to role-playing and failed attempts, which may be deliberately constructed to fail or be discovered, or may be entirely intended to result in death. Although most people who have suicidal ideation do not attempt suicide, a significant percentage do.[1] Suicidal ideation is generally associated with depression; however, it appears to have associations with many other psychiatric disorders, life events, and family events, which may increase the risk of suicidal ideation. Recurrent suicidal behavior and suicidal ideation are a hallmark of borderline personality disorder. One study found that 73% of patients with borderline personality disorder had attempted suicide, with an average of 3.4 attempts.[2] Currently, there are several treatment options for those suffering from suicidal ideation.
