The Scottsboro trial and the Tom Robinson trial are almost identical in the forms of racism and prejudice shown and in the actual trial and outcome of the trial. Racism and prejudice are evident and a key factor in both cases, which occurred in the same time period. Both processes are very common regarding the time period, the time they took place, who was persecuted, and finally, why they were persecuted. “All black people were liars, and they couldn't be trusted, it was a big part of all these paths” was the thinking around this time. Someone who was white was believed no matter what when it came to the word of a black man. Both trials were perfect examples of how white Alabamans were above the law. They proved that they could do whatever they wanted to black people and get away with it. Examples in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, presented similar factual evidence that the Tom Robinson trial and the Scottsboro trial are similar. “The Mockingbirds don't do one thing but create music for our enjoyment” (Lee 94). Lee studied law at the University of Alabama for four years and spent a year as an exchange student at Oxford Un...... middle of paper ......right from hurting the innocent Tom Robinson. The story of the Scottsboro boys is very similar to the case of Tom Robinson in the story To Kill a Mockingbird. In the Scottsboro trials, nine boys were accused of crimes against white women. Six of those boys were accused of raping the two girls and two were accused of assaulting those two girls. It was Victoria herself who pointed out the six boys who had raped her. Tom Robinson was also accused of raping Mayella Ewell, a white girl. Just like in the case of Tom Robinson, this town is just as racist as Maycomb. Over a hundred men stood outside the prison hoping to entertain themselves by beating and killing men, which can be compared to the few who were outside the Maycomb prison. Harper Lee made To Kill a Mockingbird, an autobiography using her childhood trial, The Scottsboro Trial, with the trial in the novel, The Tom Robinson Trial..
