Topic > Gibson's Feminism and Neuromancer - 537

Today many women are stereotyped in their work and social roles defined by society as a whole. Neuromancer by William Gibson in which a woman is used for specific reasons. The female character, Molly, is used for sex and her body is used for other sexual services. In this book we find numerous examples of how she is used sexually and how she must behave in her job to survive. The author uses horrible examples related to the way some women are treated today. The feminist approach is used in this book because of the way the character Molly is treated. In the second chapter of the book Molly is known as "Working Girl", which means prostitute. Here in this chapter we find the first example of how Molly is used for sex. "Her head throbbed, but the brittleness of her neck seemed to retreat. She raised herself on one elbow, rolled, and fell back against the foam, pulling her down, licking her breasts, little hard nipples sliding wetly across her cheek. He found the zipped up his leather jeans and pulled them down" (Gibson32-33). This scene occurs right after Case's surgery. You might wonder: Is being used for sex really part of her job? Or was she attracted to working with Case? It may be very confusing while reading this book. Something very similar to the scene just described also happens in chapter 11. The character Riveria performs a piece she calls "The Doll". Imagine Molly's body as she wants it to be. One line in the book states: “Then the torso formed as Riviera caressed it into birth, white, headless and perfect, shining with the lightest sheen of sweat” (140). This unholy performance can make any woman feel nauseous. It's hard to believe that a man's behavior can be so stereotypical towards a woman. Unfortunately, in today's society this is not something unusual. Women are depicted as developing different qualities to succeed in their work. In this book Molly is known as highly dominant and very knowledgeable in what she does. Not only in this book, but in real life situations women must demonstrate these strong characteristics to be recognized for their hard work. Other women have to have these qualities just to be noticed. In this book Molly has to be like this in order to protect herself from men, and she also has to have these qualities to be recognized for her hard work..
