Marxism believes that current society is the by-product of the history of all class struggles. From the complex classification of feudal lords, clerics, merchants, artisans and slaves, it was simplified into two rival groups, the bourgeoisie or oppressors, and the proletariat or the oppressed. The bourgeoisie cannot exist continuously without revolutionizing its mode of production. This includes market expansion, creating connections around the world, thus “creating a world in its own image”, making societies dependent on the bourgeoisie. Since they now monopolize production, this also implies that they exercise some power over the economy. This power allows them to gain political influence over the state. This also implies that they can make the state responsive to their interests and needs, which is in direct conflict with the interests of the proletariat. It is thanks to the power that the bourgeoisie possesses and the partiality of the State that they perpetuate the oppression of workers (Marx & Engels, 1898).
